This presentation will
make you THINK! Will Richardson and Bruce Dixon of Modern Learner and Change School talk deeply about one of the biggest buzz words in education: "Personalized Learning." We will present how SAIL has made online learning "personal" not personalized.
So, you might be wondering if there is a difference between personalized and personal education. There is!
We will argue that personal learning is a school culture and an educator's mindset. Personal learning should occur in every school K - University. Personal learning means shifting the agency to the learner. Educators give up control of the learning to the student.
We will look at the amount of money people in schools are spending on technology tools that claim to personalize learning. We point out that we tend to align schools with content delivery. Content that is neatly packaged because they cannot sell pedagogy and no one considers how relevant that content will be in the modern world.
We will conclude by encouraging all educators, parents, and even students to have more critical conversations about the need to think more deeply about what the learning environment should be for students and it shouldn’t just be about picking up the latest and greatest personalized learning software application.
We will suggest that the learning environment and the educators working alongside their students and parents make learning personal.
