What is the biggest omission in online science classes? Labs! How can we teach lab and lab writing competencies if students aren’t able to perform labs? The deeper understanding and real world connections that commonly occur in science labs were missing. Online simulations are too controlled and clean to prepare students for post-secondary labs. We needed to do better for our students. Though our Inquiry Project we were able build a course that scaffolded lab and lab writing skills, included a hands-on home lab, collected critical data on students learning needs, and fostered metacognition in both the students and ourselves.
